TD5 getting controlled by oil

Does your Landrover TD5 behave strangely lately and doesn’t it run nicely anymore. A  sign that your wiring harness is letting oil through, finally ending up in your ecu. So how to fix this

The cause

As depicted in the image on the left, the red plug shows significant oil contamination, which is problematic. The plug is designed to be water-sealed. However, the seal not only prevents water from entering but also keeps oil from escaping, leading to oil buildup inside the ECU (Engine Control Unit). The root cause of this issue lies within the injector harness located inside the engine, particularly at the plug on the right front of the engine where the problem arises.

The solution

The image on the right depicts a new wiring harness, representing an updated version designed to prevent future issues. It’s crucial to maintain cleanliness in connectors and ensure there’s no oil residue in the ECU. This can be achieved by either carefully cleaning the ECU or opting to replace it altogether.

Additionally, when accessing the area by opening the rocker cover, it’s advisable to take the opportunity to replace the gasket. Moreover, it’s important to inspect the O-ring on the front of the engine regularly, as it is prone to leakage. These proactive measures help in maintaining the overall health and longevity of the engine components.
