Powder Blue over blue. What we have here is a Triumph TR3A, commission number TS70436 L, built by the Standard Motor Company in Coventry and delivered new to the United States as a left-hand drive car. Going by the cars built around her, VIN wise, she left the line in early 1960. Her Dutch registration papers say 1962, but that is the date she was first registered, not built; she is a 1960 car.

Open the glovebox and a piece of her story is still taped to the lid: a Texas insurance card, valid from September 81' to September 82'. She lived her American life under the Texas sun until she came to Holland in 1996, where she was fully restored in the years that followed, engine included.

Wide grille, cut-away doors you can rest your elbow on, and a 2-litre four that pulls from nothing. Simple, honest, and a absolute joy on a dutch dyke road.

Powder Blue was one of the factory colours for the TR3A, and the brochure of the day paired it with black or blue trim and a black or white hood. Regarding us this one couldn't be configured any better.

Up front she wears the full-width grille that gave the TR3A its nickname 'wide mouth' unlike the earlier TR3 with it's smaller grill.
With the thick TRIUMPH letters across the bonnet and the huge TR3 badge on top of it makes sure you know what the brand made.

The insurance card in the glovebox is a Texas one, valid for a year from September 81'. On the bulkhead sits her commission plate, TS70436 L, the L for left-hand drive, and the same number is stamped in the chassis. Both body plates are still there: the brass EB 69207 is from Mulliners, who built the bodies, and the Triumph body number 1074029 is there as well.

In the interior we find blue seats with white piping and a blue dashboard full of round dials, with the big speedometer and rev counter right behind the thin-spoked steering wheel reading in Miles an hour instead of Kilometers, a giveaway of where she spent her first life. The short gear lever sits exactly where your hand falls and is remarkable slick to shift.

Under the bonnet we find the original 1991cc four-cylinder, engine number TS70686E, overhauled as part of her restoration about 20 years ago. The head has been converted to run on unleaded fuel, with electronic ignition, an adjustable electric fan and a stainless steel exhaust.
Anti-roll bars front and rear are there to keep her flat through the bends. Underneath she is astonishing clean and blue, as you can see for yourself.

Some details to get an engine guy happy: a fuel pump you can prime by hand, a starter button you push in to fire her up, and twin SU carbs that mix that fuel and air for you. Oh, and by the way, did you know this engine has some orgin in being a tractor engine. Would love to drive that tractor!
